FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE

TO ARMS, FOR OUR COUNTRY AND OUR RELIGION.

The hour has struck, valiant Greeks! For a long time, the people of Europe, fighting for their rights and their liberties, invited us to follow them. They, although almost free, have sought with all their strength to increase their liberty, and thus all their happiness. Our brethren and our friends are ready on all sides. Let us unite with enthusiasm, our country calls us on. Let the sound, then, of our warlike trumpet, resound through all the mountains—let the vallies re-echo the terrible cry of our arms! Europe will admire our valour, and our trembling and debased enemies will fly before us.

*****

Assemble, valiant and generous Greeks! Let the national phalanxes form, let the patriot present themselves and you will see the old Colossi of Despotism fall of themselves before our victorious standards.

It continued on, but Thalia had gotten the picture. “The Greeks are at war fighting for their independence?”

Her father nodded.

Thalia couldn’t decide if this was a good thing or not. She certainly wanted an independent Greece, it would be good for the people. On the other hand, war in Greece meant that it would be too dangerous for her to travel there until the hostilities came to an end—which could be years. And if the Ottomans won, there was the likelihood that they would make archaeological research very difficult. No, this was not good news, not at all.

“Does Yiannis know? Is that why he’s here?” she asked.

Lord Pemberton-Howe shook his head. “That’s why that paper is in here, and not at my breakfast table each morning. His father asked me to ensure that Yiannis didn’t find out.”

“That’s why Mr. Istoriakis sent him here. It wasn’t to create a catalog, it was to avoid the war!”

“Yes.”

“Yiannis knew there was another reason, didn’t he? He just didn’t know what it was.”

Her father smiled at her. “Nothing gets past you, does it, Thalia?”

“Well, clearly a lot has gotten past me. I didn’t even notice that you were no longer reading the paper at the table in the mornings,” she said, dropping back into her chair.

“The point here is, you can’t let Yiannis know about this. If he finds out, he would try to return to fight in this war. His father doesn’t want him to do that. He doesn’t want to lose his only son. I swore to Dimitri I would keep Yiannis safe here in England.”

Thalia nodded. She understood now. She couldn’t tell Yiannis about the shipment because then he’d want to know how they found out about it, which would lead to showing him the newspaper and the article on the war.

She got up and looked at the article on the shipment once again. There was a list of some of the objects Lord Yesterly had received. “Would you mind if I kept this? I would like to go through this list and compare it to some of the things you and Mother found.”

“Of course. But do be sure to keep it safe.
